Water Heater Lab
Our task was to create a water heater to showcase what we learned about heat and energy transfers.
My group created a water heater using cardboard as a base, newspaper for insulation and reflective paper to attract the natural light. To transfer the water from one point of the heater to the other, we used copper piping because it bends easily and holds heat well. Overall our heater was fairly successful, over about 15 minutes the water rose about 3 degrees. |
The purpose of the materials testing lab was to decide which types of wood and metals we should use while planning our outdoor classroom design. We tried to take all aspects of the items into consideration so they include everything we needed. For example, we made sure the materials were durable and weather compatible, as well as inexpensive and easy to get.
We began by testing the wood. Our types of wood were pine, redwood, and pressurized wood. We concluded that the redwood absorbed the least amount of water, but the pressurized wood is specially made to withstand weathering so we opted for that type. We also tested the types of metals and paints and selected those using the same process. |

After creating all of our blueprints, budgeting materials and creating our presentation we finally had our final design. Our space fit about 35 people and was complete with wifi access and a weatherproof whiteboard. We also included a few completely costless items such as our wood chip ground cover and stumps to be used as chairs. Once we had perfected our design and created a digital prototype, we created a presentation. My group and I included slides of all the pros and details of using our location. When that was complete, we presented our ideas to a panel of judges and from there they selected the most promising design.
